Durable Medical Equipment

Many people throughout the country have received wrist braces, knee braces, ankle braces, neck braces, and other equipment that they never ordered, was never prescribed by a doctor, and not needed. Moreover, most people were never charged a dime for stuff; but their insurance company was!

These are scams, and the perpetrators are known as “durable medical equipment” (DME) companies. These scammers charge health insurance companies – and very often Medicare Advantage plans – for unprescribed, unnecessary equipment, and count on the insurance company’s lax oversight to get paid. And sometimes the scammers try to get you to pay a coinsurance amount. DON’T!

If you received a box of braces – or if you noticed a charge on your insurance explanation of benefits (EOB) – we want to hear from you. We are investigating these scams.
